Police: Man charged with murder of store clerk after she confronted him about store sales
Police in South Carolina say a man was arrested on Wednesday after a store clerk confronted him over sales at the store.
It’s unclear what prompted the confrontation, but the woman who witnessed the altercation told local media that the man “was aggressive and said ‘I hate you, I hate you’ and then pushed her in the back of the head.”
A passerby called 911 and the man was taken into custody, police said in a statement.
The store was empty when officers arrived and the employee was not hurt.
Police did not identify the man.
A store manager said in the statement that “all our employees were on the premises when this happened,” but did not provide further details.
“We’re trying to find out more about this incident and if there is anything that could be done to help,” the statement said.
The police department did not specify how the confrontation took place.
The Associated Press reported that the clerk, identified by local media as Christina Davis, was treated at the scene and released.
The AP also reported that police had previously issued an arrest warrant for the man on Wednesday.
In a statement, South Carolina State Police said the investigation was ongoing.
“This is a very serious incident that has been taken very seriously by the South Carolina Police Department and the State Police,” it said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and the entire family during this time.”
